In August, Trump publicly extended a deadline for Putin, allowing him “a couple of weeks” to initiate talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

US President Donald Trump, in a recent phone interview with CNN’s Scott Jennings, expressed his disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the lack of progress in resolving the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The two leaders last met during a bilateral meeting in Alaska on August 15, their first official meeting since Trump assumed the presidency in January.

Although Trump praised his relationship with Putin, he did not hide his dissatisfaction with the situation on the ground. “Very disappointed. Thousands of people are dying. They’re not Americans that are dying, but they’re Russians and they’re Ukrainians, and there’s thousands, and it’s a war that makes no sense,” Trump said during the conversation.

Trump again reiterated his long-standing claim that the conflict could have been prevented entirely had he been in office in 2022. “And it would have never started if I were president, and that’s what bothers me even more, because the election was totally rigged,” he stated.

Asked about the latest meeting between Putin and Xi during the show, Trump shrugged off the idea of a threatening alliance, stating he wasn’t concerned about an “axis” targeting the US.

In August, Trump publicly extended a deadline for Putin, allowing him “a couple of weeks” to initiate talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “We’ll see what happens,” Trump said at the time. “I think in two weeks, we’ll know which way I’m going, because I’m going to go one way or the other, and they’ll learn which way.”

However, Trump did not elaborate on what specific actions he might take against Russia for missing the deadline to hold peace talks with Zelenskyy. The agreed timeframe expired on Monday without any indication of progress.

Following the August 15 Alaska summit, Trump invited President Zelenskyy and European Union leaders to the White House for further discussions. During the meeting on August 18, it was agreed that Putin would meet with Zelenskyy within the next two weeks, an expectation that now remains unfulfilled.

Meanwhile, President Putin is currently in China, attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit and the China Military Parade. During his visit, he held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, in which he reportedly briefed him on his discussions with Trump during their Alaska meeting.
