In a major development that could reshape regional alliances, US President Donald Trump is set to meet Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the White House on Thursday, the administration has officially confirmed. The meeting will be held behind closed doors in the Oval Office, with no media access permitted.

Adding to the gravity of the talks, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, is accompanying PM Sharif in what insiders describe as a “military-diplomatic mission of critical importance”. Munir reportedly landed in Washington late Wednesday night to prepare for the high-level meeting.

The agenda, shared by a top diplomatic source, reflects the deepening strategic complexity in the region and the shifting balance of global power. Key issues to be discussed include:

• The surge in terrorist activity along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, with a focus on cross-border militant networks and the Islamic State’s regional resurgence.

• Renewed counterterrorism cooperation between the US and Pakistan, which has frayed in recent years following the American withdrawal from Afghanistan.

• Prospective deals on rare earth mineral exploration and oil extraction in Pakistan, which could open up new economic frontiers for US companies.

• The Pakistan-Saudi Arabia defence pact, a growing trilateral concern for Washington given its implications for regional security.

• Rising Chinese influence in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean through Pakistan’s Gwadar Port, a key node in China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

• A potential US return to Afghanistan, including discussions about regaining strategic access to Bagram Airbase, which was abandoned in 2021.

Foreign policy experts suggest the United States is recalibrating its South Asia strategy as tensions rise with China and instability grows in Afghanistan. The inclusion of Field Marshal Munir signals that military cooperation, especially regarding counterterrorism and intelligence-sharing, may be revived at a deeper level.

The outcome of the meeting could have long-lasting implications, not only for bilateral relations between Washington and Islamabad but also for broader power dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region.
