US President Donald Trump warned that countries imposing digital services taxes and related regulations on American technology firms could face “substantial” new tariffs and restrictions on US chip exports. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Donald Trump accused governments- particularly in Europe- of unfairly targeting US tech giants while sparing Chinese competitors.

“Digital Taxes, Digital Services Legislation, and Digital Markets Regulations are all designed to harm or discriminate against American Technology. They also, outrageously, give a complete pass to China’s largest Tech Companies. This must end, and end NOW!” Donald Trump wrote.

The president said Washington would respond not only with tariffs but also with new export controls on semiconductors and sensitive technology, adding, “I put all Countries with Digital Taxes, Legislation, Rules, or Regulations on notice that unless these discriminatory actions are removed, I, as President of the United States, will impose substantial additional Tariffs on that Country’s Exports to the USA.”

He asserted, “America, and American Technology Companies, are neither the ‘piggy bank’ nor the ‘doormat’ of the World any longer. Show respect to America and our amazing Tech Companies or, consider the consequences!”

Several countries- particularly in Europe0 have levied taxes on revenues of digital service providers such as Google, Meta, Apple and Amazon, escalating transatlantic trade tensions over recent years.

Donald Trump’s warning comes a week after Washington and Brussels pledged to tackle “unjustified trade barriers” and agreed not to impose customs duties on electronic transmissions. The European Union also confirmed it would not adopt network usage fees.
