US President Donald Trump has reacted publicly to the engagement of pop superstar Taylor Swift and NFL tight end Travis Kelce, offering an unexpectedly warm message despite his previously harsh comments about the singer.

Just hours after Swift and Kelce announced their engagement on social media on Tuesday, Trump was asked for his thoughts on the duo during his interaction following the Cabinet meeting. A reporter posed the question, “Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are engaged. And the world wants your reaction, sir.”

Trump responded with praise and goodwill. “Well, I wish him a lot of luck. I think he’s a great player. I think he’s a great guy. And I think that she’s a terrific person. So I wish them a lot of luck,” the President said.

The couple revealed the news in a private but heartfelt Instagram post, which quickly went viral. The image featured Kelce down on one knee, embracing Swift, with the caption, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”

The engagement announcement came during Trump’s Cabinet meeting and quickly became a trending topic online. But what made Trump’s reaction particularly noteworthy was the apparent shift in tone. In the past, the President had openly criticised Swift, especially after she endorsed his 2024 opponent, former Vice President Kamala Harris.

In a Truth Social post from September 15, 2024, Trump lashed out at the singer, writing bluntly, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” The post drew criticism from Swift’s fans.

In May 2025, Trump doubled down on his disdain, suggesting the singer’s popularity had waned. “Has anyone noticed that, since I said ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,’ she’s no longer ‘HOT?’” he wrote, taking credit for what he claimed was a decline in her public image. The post was linked to earlier comments in which he praised actress Sydney Sweeney as “the hottest” after seeing her jeans ad, while mocking Swift’s supposed reception at the Super Bowl.

Trump’s latest comments have surprised many, given his prior history with the Grammy-winning artist.

Meanwhile, Swift and Kelce have been romantically involved since 2023, with the pop star frequently seen at Kansas City Chiefs games. Their engagement has drawn headlines worldwide, and reactions continue to pour in across social media, from fans, celebrities, and now, the President of the United States.
