US President Donald Trump pushed back against criticism that his administration has taken no action against Russia, citing tough secondary sanctions on India that he said have cost Moscow “hundreds of billions of dollars.”
When asked by a reporter about the lack of action on Russia, Donald Trump replied, “Would you say that putting secondary sanctions on India… that cost hundreds of billions of dollars to Russia. You call that no action?”

Donald Trump added that additional measures were still on the table. He said, “I haven’t done phase two yet or phase three. I have no message to President Putin. He knows where I stand, and he’ll make a decision… we’ll either be happy about it or unhappy and if we’re unhappy about it, you’ll see things happen.”
The Trump administration has slapped a 25 per cent reciprocal duty on Indian goods, along with another 25 per cent penalty linked to New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil- bringing tariffs to a steep 50 per cent, among the highest in the world. Donald Trump has repeatedly accused India of “fueling Russia’s deadly attacks on Ukraine” by buying discounted crude, even as he has stopped short of imposing harsher sanctions directly on Moscow.
What Vladimir Putin Said On Ukraine Peace Talks
The US President’s remarks come as Russian President Vladimir Putin questioned the value of direct talks with Ukraine under current conditions.
“I’ve never ruled out meeting Zelenskyy, but the question is whether it can be meaningful,” he said, arguing that Kyiv is constrained by martial law, constitutional requirements for referendums and what he called an “illegitimate leader.”
Vladimir Putin added that Russia is “not fighting for territories, but for people’s rights- to speak their language, to practice their culture,” warning the conflict could only end if “common sense prevails.”
Otherwise, he said, Moscow would pursue its goals through military means.
