In a nationally televised address from the Oval Office on Tuesday, President Trump announced the official relocation of the US Space Command headquarters from Colorado to Huntsville, Alabama. As part of the announcement, the President also declared that Alabama will henceforth be recognised as “Rocket City,” a nod to its rich history in aerospace and defence, particularly around NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and the Redstone Arsenal.

President Trump emphasised the economic benefits of the move, claiming it will bring approximately 30,000 new jobs to the region and serve as a catalyst for technological innovation and investment. “This is a tremendous opportunity for the people of Alabama,” he said, describing the decision as a win for national security and American leadership in space.

The decision ends years of political and economic rivalry between Alabama and Colorado, both of which lobbied vigorously for the headquarters due to its significant economic and strategic implications. The US Air Force had previously identified Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal as the preferred site in 2021, citing its existing infrastructure and strong ties to the defence sector.
