Delhi-NCR Earthquake: An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 struck Afghanistan on Thursday, days after a major earthquake in northern Afghanistan killed over 2,200 people and caused widespread damage.

According to the Afghanistan government’s statement, an earthquake at a depth of 160 km struck regions in Nangarhar and its surroundings.

The earthquake was so strong that the tremors were also felt in Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi-NCR.

Earlier today, an earthquake of magnitude 4.8 struck Afghanistan again, as per the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

As per the statement, the earthquake struck at a depth of 135km.

In a post on X, the NCS said, “EQ of M: 4.8, On: 04/09/2025 10:40:56 IST, Lat: 34.38 N, Long: 70.37 E, Depth: 135 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”

Earlier, an earthquake struck Afghanistan late Wednesday night at a shallow depth of 10km, making it susceptible to aftershocks.

A 6.0-magnitude quake struck late Sunday in several provinces, flattening villages and leaving people trapped under the rubble of homes constructed mostly of mud bricks and wood, unable to withstand the shock.

The death count from the powerful earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan at the weekend rose sharply to more than 2,200 on Thursday, making it the deadliest in decades to hit the country.

The vast majority of those killed in the magnitude-6.0 earthquake that jolted the mountainous region bordering Pakistan late Sunday were in Kunar province, where 2,205 people died and 3,640 were injured, according to a Taliban government count.

Another 12 people were killed and hundreds injured in the neighbouring provinces of Nangarhar and Laghman.

The death count had been expected to rise as volunteers and rescuers were still pulling bodies from the rubble.

Rescue operations are continuing as emergency workers and local villagers search for survivors trapped beneath the rubble. Many homes in the region, made of mud and stone, collapsed instantly during the shallow quake.

United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Afghanistan Indrika Ratwatte had said that earthquake could affect “hundreds of thousands”.

Rescuers searched through the night and all day for survivors in the rubble of homes flattened in Kunar, where more than 5,400 houses were destroyed, government spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat said on X.

Many of the worst-affected areas were still unreachable by road, but emergency facilities were being set up and multiple countries had announced they would provide aid, Fitrat said

Earlier, on Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in a post on X, stated that Indian earthquake assistance has reached Kabul by air.

“Indian earthquake assistance reaches Kabul by air. 21 tonnes of relief materials, including blankets, tents, hygiene kits, water storage tanks, generators, kitchen utensils, portable water purifiers, sleeping bags, essential medicines, wheelchairs, hand sanitisers, water purification tablets, ORS solutions and medical consumables, were airlifted today,” he said.
