China showcased its military prowess impressively at the Victory Day Parade in Beijing on September 3. From missiles to fighter planes, the technological superiority of every weapon was evident. However, the true game-changer is not a weapon, but a semiconductor: Gallium Nitride (GaN).
China has not only deployed the world’s most advanced J-20 stealth fighter, but the GaN-based AESA radar installed in it has made it more formidable. This radar significantly increases detection range and renders enemy electronic jamming almost ineffective. According to analysts, the true battleground of the 21st century will be the semiconductor industry and not traditional weaponry.

China’s PL-15 air-to-air missile is notable for its advanced capabilities, especially its GaN-based radar seeker, which improves detection and targeting. The missile can lock onto enemy aircraft at long ranges and resist electronic jamming.
With its GaN-powered radar, the PL-15 can even detect stealth aircraft, tracking targets hundreds of kilometres away with precision. This capability has led to it being referred to as the “Super Hunter of the Sky.”
Key Features of GaN Technology
Previously, Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) was used in AESA radar and missile seekers. However, GaN has revolutionised the landscape. Because of GaN:
- Radar power has increased 5-10 times.
- The system remains operational even in hot environments.
- It requires less maintenance and has a longer service life.
- China’s PL-15 missile can now effectively neutralise any enemy despite electronic jamming.
Why The US Is Watching Closely
US, which pioneered AESA technology, still relies on the old SPY-1 radar in its Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. In contrast, China has equipped its PL-15 missile with GaN technology. Consequently, American defence experts have begun acknowledging that China’s new missiles will pose a significant challenge in the future.
Supply Chain Control: China’s Quiet Advantage
China’s real strategy is not just to manufacture weapons, but to dominate the entire supply chain. China produces more than 90% of the world’s refined gallium. This is why the US and Europe struggle to match China’s advancements in this technology.
Experts note that the PL-15 missile, combined with GaN technology, gives China a technological edge in certain areas. This is reflected in platforms like the J-20 stealth fighter and the PL-15 missile, prompting attention from the US and its allies regarding advancements in modern weaponry.
