US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, where he issued a blunt call to stop the “killing” in Ukraine, as President Donald Trump suggested that Ukraine could win back the swaths of territory it had lost to Moscow.

Rubio “reiterated President (Donald) Trump’s call for the killing to stop and the need for Moscow to take meaningful steps toward a durable resolution of the Russia-Ukraine war,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said.

His comments came after Trump made an extraordinary turn against Russia on Tuesday by suggesting that Kyiv could not only win the war and re-take its territory. Trump had been saying for months that Ukraine would not regain lost territory.

“After getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia Military and Economic situation and, after seeing the Economic trouble it is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday.

Trump’s latest remarks underscore his frustration with Russia, which has refused to entertain his efforts at ending the Ukraine war. He also pledged to continue supplying weapons to NATO in light of the recent Russian incursions, adding that NATO could “do what they want with them.”

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the United Nations General Assembly that there can be no ceasefire in Ukraine because “Russia refuses”, accusing Moscow of abducting thousands of children, attacking civilian infrastructure and spreading instability across Europe.

He also warned that Europe could not afford to lose strategically located Moldova to Russian influence and let it follow Belarus and Georgia into Moscow’s orbit. Moldova, a former Soviet republic, goes to the polls on Sunday with pro-EU President Maia Sandu facing a barrage of deepfake videos and other disinformation linked to Russia.
