Liz Hopkin, a teacher from the Wales’ Carmarthenshire Ysgol Dyffryn Aman school, said she cannot return to her teaching life again after she was stabbed by a student obsessed by German dictator Adolf Hitler.

Hopkin was among three people stabbed by a student, according to the Daily Mail. UK-based news agency BBC did not name the 13-year-old student but said that she was sentenced to 15 years in detention earlier this year, after she was found guilty of attempted murder.

Hopkin said that the teenager stabbed her in April 2024 when she intervened and stopped her from stabbing her other colleague, Fiona Elias. The student shouted “I’m going to kill you” as he lunged at them.

“It’s been a long time but it’s still very much vivid there in my head. It was intent. Had Fiona been there on her own at that point, the outcome would have been very different. She stabbed me in the leg and then she came towards me and stabbed me in the neck and then twice in the back,” she was quoted as saying by the broadcaster.

She had told her classmates that she would stab Fiona Elias.

“I thought that was the end, really. I haven’t been back to work. I can’t ever imagine doing that work again, I can’t imagine going into a school, I can’t go past the front of the school. I feel like I’ve got a lot to offer but everything stopped that day,” she said.

Earlier this year, Swansea Crown Court was told the teenager carried a knife to school on a daily basis.

A multi-agency review released on Wednesday found she had a deep fascination with war and weapons, coupled with a troubled childhood and mental health struggles.

The review’s author, Gladys Rhodes White, issued 11 recommendations to authorities, noting that the girl might have received “targeted help” had information been properly “shared and assessed.”
