A cinema in the western part of Canada’s Toronto city has cancelled screenings of Indian films following an attempt to set the theatre ablaze and shootout on its property in the past week.

Film.Ca Cinemas, the group on whose property the incidents happened, said the incidents happened overnight when the theatre was closed and no one was injured.

The group told Canadian broadcasters that the incidents “may be connected to disagreements” within the South Asian film industry but did not point out the nation of origin of the cinemas concerned.

Police officials with the Halton Police Department said they are probing the incident after two suspects used flammable liquid to set the theatre’s entrance doors on fire last Thursday.

They added that the blazed remained contained and didn’t cause significant damage, while speaking to broadcaster CBC.

Another theatre chain, York Cinemas, also said they are “not screening Indian movies without further notice”.

“Please note that, due to recent incidents, we will not be screening Indian movies until further notice. This decision has been made with the safety of our employees and guests in mind. Advance ticket purchases will be refunded, and the amount should appear in your account within a few business days,” York Cinemas said in a statement, following the arson attack.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand also condemned the incident in a post on X.
