Indian Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, has said that Moscow is looking to hire more skilled Indian workers and is working closely with New Delhi to simplify the payment system for travellers, including students and tourists.

The envoy made these remarks in a recent interview with Russian news agency TASS.

Speaking on efforts to streamline the payment process, Kumar said the Indo-Russian Working Group on Banking and Finance is actively discussing ways to make financial transactions easier for all categories of travellers.

“The Indo-Russian working group on Banking and Finance, comprising representatives from relevant ministries and the central boards of both nations, is actively engaged in discussions concerning technical aspects of messaging systems and payment mechanisms to make financial transactions easier for all categories of travelers,” Kumar said.

He also pointed out that several Russian banks, including VTB and Sberbank, are already operating in India and offering services to make cash and digital payments easier for Russian tourists visiting the country.

In addition to financial cooperation, Russian companies in sectors such as machinery and electronics are expressing growing interest in hiring Indian workers, the Ambassador revealed.

“At a broader level, there is manpower requirement in Russia and India has a skilled manpower. So at present, within the Russian regulations, framework of Russian regulations, laws and quotas, the companies are hiring Indians,” Kumar said.

He noted that most of the Indians currently working in Russia are employed in the construction and textile sectors, but the demand is now rising in high-skill areas like machinery and electronics.

As more Indians arrive in Russia for work, the envoy noted that the Indian mission is experiencing a rise in demand for consular services, including passport renewals and other administrative support.

“When people come and leave, they need consular services to extend passports, childbirth, say for example, and loss of passport and those kinds, basically consular services,” Kumar added.

These developments come at a time when several Western countries — including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom — are tightening immigration policies, making Russia a potential alternative destination for skilled Indian workers.
