Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah appealed to Nepal’s Gen Z and the wider public on Thursday to remain calm as the country transitions to an interim administration and fresh elections.

In a post on X, Shah called the current moment “unprecedented” and urged young protesters not to panic. “Please be patient. Now the country is going to get an interim government, which will hold new elections… to give the country a new mandate,” he wrote.

Shah said he “fully” backs the proposal for former Chief Justice Sushila Karki to lead the interim or electoral government, adding that Gen Z’s “understanding, wisdom, and unity” show their maturity.

Addressing those “rushing to take over the leadership,” Shah cautioned against short-term moves. “The country needs your passion, your thinking, and your honesty permanently, not temporarily. There will be elections for that. Please don’t rush,” he said.

Appealing to the President, Shah called for swift steps “to protect the historic revolution brought about by Gen Z,” urging the immediate formation of an interim government and dissolution of parliament.

Shah’s remarks come amid heightened political flux, with parties negotiating the contours of a caretaker setup expected to steer the country to polls.

Nepal was rocked by Gen Z–led protests sparked by a short-lived social-media ban and long-simmering anger over corruption, triggering curfews and army deployment as clashes intensified in Kathmandu and other cities. The entire protest has left around 25 people dead, while over 600 people were injured. Authorities have now reopened Kathmandu airport after a brief shutdown, but prohibitory orders remain in force as the situation evolves.
