Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a phone conversation on Monday to discuss the ongoing Gaza war, Iran’s nuclear program, and broader regional stability, the Kremlin confirmed.

According to the Kremlin readout, the leaders exchanged views on US President Donald Trump’s recently unveiled 20-point proposal aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza. Putin reiterated Moscow’s stance “in favour of a comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian issue,” signaling Russia’s continued interest in shaping post-war diplomacy in the region.

The discussion also touched on efforts to revive negotiations around Iran’s nuclear program — a matter of mutual concern for both Moscow and Jerusalem — and on the situation in Syria, where Russia maintains a significant military presence. The Kremlin said both sides underscored the importance of “preventing further escalation” in the Middle East.

This was the first known conversation between Putin and Netanyahu since August and comes amid growing international engagement around the Gaza crisis.

Balancing Ties Amid US-Russia Tensions

Israeli broadcaster KAN News reported that Netanyahu has been quietly working to ease tensions between Putin and Trump, even as Washington and Moscow remain at odds over Russia’s war in Ukraine. Netanyahu’s office has reportedly coordinated with Russian officials on several fronts, reflecting Israel’s delicate balancing act between its strategic ties with the US and its pragmatic relationship with the Kremlin.

Despite these diplomatic overtures, Russia’s close engagement with Palestinian factions — including Hamas — continues to draw scrutiny. Earlier this year, after the release of Russian-Israeli hostage Sasha Troufanov, Putin praised Hamas for what he called a “humanitarian act.”

“Your release is a result of Russia’s long-standing ties with Palestinians and their representatives,” Putin told Troufanov and his family. “We should thank Hamas’s leadership for this decision.”

Why The Sudden Phone Call

The call between Putin and Netanyahu comes as multiple global powers attempt to shape the outcome of Trump’s proposed Gaza peace plan. Moscow’s involvement adds another layer of complexity to the already tense diplomatic landscape — with Russia seeking to reassert influence across the Middle East while managing its own confrontation with the West.
