Nepal Protests: At least three police personnel were brutally killed by the agitated Gen Z protesters, who have stormed the streets of Kathmandu and other regions to protest against KP Sharma Oli government’s decision to ban social media platforms.

As per news outlet Khabarhub, the three police officials, stationed at Koteshwor, were killed by the agitated mob even after they had already surrendered.

According to eyewitnesses, protesters first set ablaze the police division office and then dragged the officers on the street.

Despite laying down their arms, the three officers were beaten to death by the mob. The Nepal Police Headquarters in Kathmandu’s Naxal area confirmed the killings, describing them as a barbaric act that underscored the worsening security situation in the capital.

Additionally, the protesters also attempted to attack the Police headquarters, prompting security forces to resort to gunfire.

Despite Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation, demonstrations have continued unabated across the Himalayan nation.

A nationwide ban on major social media platforms—including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—was imposed because platforms failed to register with the Nepal government. This triggered widespread anger, particularly among young people already frustrated with government corruption and nepotism.

On September 8, violent clashes broke out as protesters stormed the parliament and other government facilities. Police used tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and reportedly live ammunition.

Meanwhile, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli tendered his resignation on Tuesday after anti-government protests, launched against the government’s ban on social media, spiralled out of control. The protests left 19 people dead and over 300 others injured. The protests have escalated a day after Oli revoked the ban on social media, a key trigger for the nationwide protests.

The protesters, under the banner of Gen Z, shouted slogans such as “KP Chor, Desh Chhod” (KP thief, leave the country) and “Take Action Against Corrupt Leaders” in multiple parts of the capital city, Kathmandu, news agency PTI reported.

Leaders from civil society and independent youth organisations have appealed to the demonstrators to exercise restraint and avoid further destruction. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as tensions remain high.
