Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is likely to meet US President Donald Trump later this month, according to Pakistani media.

Sharif will be accompanied by Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, who dictates policies in Pakistan, in his meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Geo News reported.

Munir was seen in several high-profile summits/meetings alongside Sharif, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in China last month.

This meeting will come months after Trump met Munir, marking the first time a US president had hosted the head of Pakistan’s army, widely regarded as the most powerful figure in the country, at the White House unaccompanied by senior Pakistani civilian officials.

“Reason I had him here was I wanted to thank him for not going into the war and ending it… Prime Minister Modi just left a little while ago, and we are working on a trade deal with India and also with Pakistan… I am so happy. Two very smart people decided not to keep going with the war. Those are two big nuclear powers. I was honoured to meet him,” Trump said after meeting Munir.
