Pakistan has conducted multiple drone and missile strikes targeting hideouts of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Afghanistan’s Khost and Nangarhar provinces, top intelligence sources told CNN-News18.

According to these sources, the strikes were launched late Tuesday night in coordination with Afghan Taliban authorities, who were informed in advance about the planned operations. The attacks reportedly focused on the Spera district in Khost province and the Shinwaru district of Nangarhar province, long believed to serve as safe havens for TTP militants.

Initial intelligence assessments indicate that the strikes inflicted heavy casualties on TTP operatives. However, reports from local residents in the targeted areas suggest that women and children were also among the dead. “Two massive explosions were heard, followed by a series of smaller blasts,” a local resident from Khost said. Witnesses in the area claimed to have seen unmanned aircraft hovering overhead prior to the attacks, describing the distinct sound of drones in the night sky.

Locals in Khost’s Spera district reported that a residential building was hit, while residents in Nangarhar’s Shinwaru area said a facility linked to TTP activities was destroyed. “We saw drones circling above and then heard loud bangs as missiles struck,” one source in Nangarhar said.

Pakistani security officials have not publicly commented on the strikes, but intelligence sources emphasised that the operation was part of Islamabad’s ongoing efforts to dismantle TTP networks operating from across the border. The TTP, which has intensified attacks inside Pakistan over the past year, is believed to maintain significant operational infrastructure in eastern Afghanistan.

The development underscores the rising security tensions between Pakistan and TTP elements operating from Afghan soil, even as Islamabad seeks to build working ties with the Taliban-led government in Kabul. Further details, including an official casualty count, are awaited.
