When armed Israeli forces intercepted a flotilla of over 40 civilian boats attempting to deliver aid to war-torn Gaza on Wednesday night, two web developers in Glasgow raced to keep the world informed. Their site, created in collaboration with Forensic Architecture, streamed live footage from onboard cameras and updated vessel statuses as each was intercepted. The site saw 6 million visits in two days—unprecedented for Malcolm’s studio, Rectangle.

The interception drew massive global attention, sparking protests across continents. The Global Sumud Flotilla, carrying 500 activists—including Swedish climate advocate Greta Thunberg and Nelson Mandela’s grandson—was the most high-profile attempt yet to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

Though the flotilla was stopped and escorted to Israel, the mission energized a growing global movement. Protests erupted from Europe to Latin America and Asia, while political leaders worldwide condemned the seizure. The campaign gained further momentum through coordinated grassroots organizing, a savvy media strategy, and technological innovation including satellite tracking and live social media updates.

Born from a June meeting in Tunis among Gaza-focused activist groups, the flotilla quickly gathered wide support. Italy’s Music 4 Peace collected over 500 tons of aid in just five days, while unions backed the effort with port strikes and actions. Across Europe, organizers mobilized communities and built local support networks.

“The cultural impact is beginning to show. That is not just the flotilla, but they are making a difference,” Dan Mercea, a professor of digital and social change, told Reuters.

New Flotilla Heading For Gaza

As pressure mounts, a second flotilla of 11 boats has already set sail, signaling that the campaign—and the movement behind it—is far from over.

Flotilla Live Feed

The flotilla maintained a steady stream of updates across X, Telegram, and Instagram, and held live press conferences via Zoom with activists onboard. Among those on the boats were Nelson Mandela’s grandson and climate activist Greta Thunberg, who gave interviews from the ship’s deck.

Live feeds from the vessels provided a rare, real-time view of events as they unfolded. Ship tracking technology had been upgraded for the mission, with multiple layers of backup, including Garmin devices and even mobile phones, to ensure continuity.

In Glasgow, developers Lizzie Malcolm and Daniel Powers—working with the London-based research group Forensic Architecture—monitored the feeds closely. As the Israeli navy boarded the boats under nightfall, demanding captains shut off their engines, viewers around the world watched armed soldiers using night vision equipment approach the civilian vessels.

Following an agreed safety protocol, the activists donned life vests and raised their hands in the air. From their studio in Glasgow, Malcolm and Powers updated the flotilla’s website in real-time, switching each vessel’s status from “sailing” to “intercepted” as the night progressed.

“We have seen how much people want to watch this. It does something. There is something positive in this – you are really willing them to get there,” Malcolm told Reuters
