Canada could be the 51st state of America, Donald Trump jested with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during their bilateral meeting at the White House on Tuesday.

Carney made his second visit to the Oval Office ahead of next year’s review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement and as one of the world’s most durable and amicable alliances has been fractured by Trump’s trade war and annexation threats.

The US President’s remark on the US-Canada merger came as Carney called Trump a “transformative President”, and even claimed he mediated in the India-Pakistan four-day conflict.

As Carney was showering these praises on Trump, and highlighted the agenda for their discussion, “This is, in many respects, the most important…”

Trump butted in, “The merger of Canada and the United States!”

Carney laughed along and quipped, “That wasn’t where I was going”.

Trump said that while the two nations have had their differences, they can work them out.
