The High Commission said that the gesture is inspired by PM Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative and reflects the shared commitment to environmental conservation.

“His Majesty The King has been graciously pleased to send a Kadamb tree to India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday. The gesture, inspired by PM Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative, reflects their shared commitment to environmental conservation,” the High Commission said in a post on X while sharing the photograph of the sapling.

During his two-day visit to the UK in July this year, PM Modi presented the King with a Sonoma tree sapling as part of the initiative, which encourages individuals to plant a tree in honour of their mothers.

King Charles last met Indian premier in December 2023 on the sidelines of the Cop28 UN climate change summit hosted in Dubai. The latest meeting demonstrates the continued importance of the relationship between Britain and one of the Commonwealth’s largest nations.

The Kadamb tree (scientific name: Neolamarckia cadamba) is a fast-growing, deciduous tree native to South and Southeast Asia. Revered in Indian mythology and associated with Lord Krishna, the tree holds cultural and spiritual significance. It thrives in tropical climates and can grow up to 45 meters tall, featuring a straight trunk and a broad, dense canopy. It is used in traditional medicine and its wood is used for making pulp, plywood, and light furniture.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is celebrating his 75th birthday today. World leaders, including US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, sent their greetings, commending PM Modi’s leadership on global cooperation, sustainable development, and peace. In response, the Indian premier expressed his gratitude.
