In what is believed to be an unusual turn, former US Vice President Kamala Harris sharply criticised former President Joe Biden, calling his 2024 re-election bid “reckless,” according to an excerpt from her upcoming memoir. Harris argued that Biden’s decision to seek a second term was driven more by personal ego and ambition than by duty.

Harris described how the phrase “It’s Joe and Jill’s decision” became a widespread slogan within the party, as if everyone had been mesmerised, providing a stark insight into the Democratic Party’s internal conflict as concerns grew over Biden’s age and his ability to undertake a second term.

“‘It’s Joe and Jill’s decision’. We all said that, like a mantra, as if we’d all been hypnotised. Was it grace, or was it recklessness? In retrospect, I think it was recklessness,” said the former Vice President, who entered the 2024 presidential race after Biden was forced to abandon his re-election bid.

“The stakes were simply too high. This wasn’t a choice that should have been left to an individual’s ego, an individual’s ambition. It should have been more than a personal decision,” she added.

She further, in her political memoir – 107 Days, wrote that, as Vice President, she was in the “least suitable position” to tell Biden not to seek re-election.

“And of all the people in the White House, I was in the worst position to make the case that he should drop out. I knew it would come off to him as incredibly self-serving if I advised him not to run. He would see it as naked ambition, perhaps as poisonous disloyalty, even if my only message was: Don’t let the other guy win,” she wrote.

The excerpts also highlighted her strained relationship with the Biden White House, as Harris alleged that the President’s staff consistently sidelined her. She claimed that they operated with a “zero-sum” mindset, believing that “if she’s shining, he’s dimmed”.

Additionally, Harris denied the viral claims of a “big conspiracy” to conceal Biden’s frailty, describing the former president as “a smart guy with long experience and deep conviction, able to discharge the duties of president”.

However, she added that Biden at 81 got tired. “That’s when his age showed in physical and verbal stumbles,” she wrote.

Harris’s remarks are shocking given her unwavering public defence of Biden throughout his presidency. She even supported his re-election bid, which he abandoned in July 2024. Following Biden’s exit, Harris became the Democratic nominee; however, she lost to Republican candidate Donald Trump in the November election.
