The Israeli army on Saturday urged the residents of Gaza City to leave for a “humanitarian zone” in the south ahead of a planned military operation to capture the territory’s largest urban centre.

Army spokesperson Avichay Adraee said in a message to the residents on social media, “Take this opportunity to move early to the (Al-Mawasi) humanitarian zone and join the thousands of people who have already gone there.”

The official, however, did not clearly mention when the new offensive would take place. Notably, another spokesman had previously said it would not be announced in advance to maintain the “element of surprise”, news agency AFP reported.

The military said in a separate statement on Saturday that the humanitarian zone had essential “infrastructure such as field hospitals, water pipelines, and desalination facilities, alongside the continued supply of food, tents, medicines, and medical equipment.”

It also added that the humanitarian efforts in the south “will continue on an ongoing basis in cooperation with the UN and international organisations, in parallel to the expansion of the ground operation”.

According to the United Nations’ estimates, there are nearly a million people in and around Gaza City. It warned of a “disaster” if the IDF proceeds with its plans to seize the territory.

Israel has been facing mounting pressure domestically and internationally to put the war in Gaza to an end.

Hamas – which Israel has vowed to finish – agreed to a ceasefire proposal in August that involved a temporary truce and the staggered release of hostages held captive in Gaza.

However, Israel has put forth the demand that the Palestinian militant group release all hostages at once, lay down its arms, and give up its control of Gaza, among other conditions.
