Israel launched airstrikes on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa on Thursday, killing two people, in response to a drone attack that struck an Israeli resort, according to the Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

Israeli forces struck several Houthi-linked targets in the rebel-held capital, warning of more attacks to come, said Israeli officials. Houthi spokesman Anees Alasbahi provided a preliminary toll of two dead and 48 wounded.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said that Israel had “just dealt a powerful blow to numerous terror targets of the Houthi terror organisation in Sanaa” and eliminated dozens of terror operatives and destroyed stockpiles of drones and other weaponry.

Explosions were heard, followed by large plumes of smoke from three areas in the Yemeni capital after the Israeli airstrikes, reported AFP.

Israel Warns Of Future Attacks

According to the Israeli military, the targets included the general staff headquarters of the Houthis and other security and intelligence sites, including some used to store weapons and “plan and execute” attacks on Israel. The group’s military public relations headquarters were also targeted.

The military said Israel would “conduct additional offensive operations against the Houthi regime in the near future”. Meanwhile, the Houthi-run media said a power station and two residential neighbourhoods had been targeted in the strikes.

This came after a drone launched from Yemen struck the southern Israeli city of Eilat on Wednesday, injuring 22 people. The Israeli military attributed the attack to Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, who have regularly fired drones and missiles at Israel, claiming solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Katz warned of a severe response to the drone attack. In August, Israel assassinated the head of the Houthi government Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser al-Rahawi together with other senior officials.

The Houthis have repeatedly attacked Israel since the Gaza war began and have targeted ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden that they allege are connected to Israel. The rebel group controls large parts of Yemen, which has been gripped by war since 2014, and is part of Iran’s so-called Axis of Resistance.
