Israel’s foreign minister on Thursday condemned the deadly attack at a synagogue in Manchester killing two people, and accused the UK government of failing to curb the “rising antisemitism” in Britain.

In a post on X, foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar said: “I am appalled by the murderous attack near the Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester on the morning of the holiest day for the Jewish people: Yom Kippur.”

“The truth must be told: blatant and rampant antisemitic and anti-Israeli incitement, as well as calls of support for terror, have recently become a widespread phenomenon in the streets of London, in cities across Britain, and on its campuses,” he further said.

“The authorities in Britain have failed to take the necessary action to curb this toxic wave of antisemitism and have effectively allowed it to persist,” he added, saying Israel expected “more than words from the (Keir) Starmer government” in addressing the issue.

British police have declared Thursday’s deadly assault at a synagogue in Manchester a ‘terrorist attack’ after a man rammed a car into worshippers and stabbed several people during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

Two members of the Jewish community were killed and four others seriously injured, said officials.

The incident took place at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall shortly after 9:30 am local time.

Worshippers managed to prevent the attacker from entering the synagogue, according to Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

The suspect, who was wearing a vest resembling an explosive device, was fatally shot by armed officers within seven minutes of the assault.

Authorities said the suspect’s identity is believed to be known but has not been formally released. Two additional arrests have been made in connection with the case.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, cutting short his visit to a European summit in Copenhagen, returned to London to chair a COBRA emergency meeting.
