The US Justice Department on Friday released a transcript of a previously undisclosed interview with Ghislaine Maxwell, the longtime associate and former girlfriend of convicted sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein. Maxwell, now 63, is currently serving a 20-year federal prison sentence for sex trafficking and other crimes related to Epstein’s abuse of underage girls.

The newly released materials stem from a two-day interview conducted on July 24 and 25 at a Florida courthouse between Maxwell and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. Maxwell was granted limited immunity for the purpose of the interview.

Deputy Attorney General Blanche announced the release in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that it was done “in the interest of transparency.” The post included direct links to both the transcript and accompanying audio files.

The interview transcript sheds new light on what has been widely referred to as the ‘Epstein Files’. Maxwell addressed longstanding speculation surrounding Epstein’s so-called “black book,” which some allege contains names of powerful figures tied to his activities. When asked directly whether such a list existed, Maxwell responded, “There is no list that I am aware of. I’ve never, at any time, at least during the period of time when I was – present.”

She then elaborated on the origins of the alleged list, stating that it first surfaced in 2009 through Brad Edwards, an attorney at the law firm Rothstein, Rosenfeldt & Adler, who had filed several civil suits against Epstein. According to Maxwell, Edwards contacted the FBI, claiming he had come across a piece of evidence that purportedly included “a list of all of his clients and victims, underage girls, massage therapists, and the men who are having sex with them.”

Maxwell disputed the validity of the claims, saying, “The truth is different from what’s in both the criminal complaint and in that FBI affidavit, and in Brad Edwards’ own statements on the subject.” She also alleged that her then-boyfriend was asked for $10 million to ensure her name would not appear in Epstein-related lawsuits.

Discussing public figures, Maxwell addressed rumours surrounding US President Donald Trump and former President Bill Clinton. She stated she never saw Trump “in an inappropriate setting,” and added that she did not remember Trump appearing in Epstein’s 50th birthday book, which she had assembled. Additionally, Maxwell denied remembering any photo of a naked woman, an image previously rumoured to exist but denied by Trump himself.

On Clinton, Maxwell described a cordial relationship, noting, “President Clinton liked me, and we got along terribly well. But I never saw that warmth with Mr Epstein.” She emphasised that Clinton “never, absolutely never” visited Epstein’s private island in the US Virgin Islands.
