A Chinese court has ordered a woman to compensate the family of her married lover who died of a cardiac arrest after they had sex in a hotel room, according to a report in South China Morning Post (SCMP).

According to SCMP, the incident was reported in Pingnan County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on July 14, 2024.

The deceased, a 66-year-old man surnamed Zhou, had a history of hypertension and had previously suffered a stroke, the report mentioned.

Hours before his death, the man met his lover, identified as Zhuang, at a hotel. After intercourse, Zhuang woke up to find Zhou unresponsive and not breathing.

It is learnt that upon finding her lover motionless, Zhuang—who also suffers from high blood pressure—returned home to take her medication instead of seeking immediate help for Zhou. She returned after nearly an hour later and alerted hotel staff, who then found the body. He was declared dead by medical staff and police, the report suggests.

Thereafter, Zhou’s wife and son filed a lawsuit against both Zhuang and the hotel, demanding 550,000 yuan (approximately Rs 66 lakh) in compensation along with funeral costs.

The court ruled that Zhou’s death was primarily due to his pre-existing ailments. However, it held Zhuang partially responsible for failing to seek prompt medical assistance and for being involved in an extramarital affair.

As a result, the court ordered Zhuang to pay 62,000 yuan (around US$8,600) which is 10 per cent of the original claim. The hotel was not held liable, as the incident occurred in a private room and not in a public area.
