Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted again, sending fountains of lava soaring 330 feet (100 meters) into the air from its summit crater- marking the 32nd eruptive episode since December 2024 when the volcano’s current eruption cycle began.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said lava first emerged from the north vent of Halemaʻumaʻu crater shortly after midnight. By mid-morning, fountains were also gushing from the south vent and a third opening in between. All of the lava has remained contained within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Pressure Beneath The Crater

According to scientists, a lower magma chamber beneath the crater is receiving molten rock directly from the Earth’s interior at roughly 3.8 cubic meters per second. The influx forces magma into an upper chamber, eventually driving it above ground through narrow vents.

Ken Hon, scientist-in-charge at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory told Guardian, “This magma blows the chamber up like a balloon and pushes it through cracks until it bursts out like liquid from a shaken champagne bottle.”

Kilauea Volcano’s Eruption

Since December 2024, Kilauea volcano has been using the same underground pathway, making each fountain a new phase of the same eruption. Earlier bursts shot lava more than 1,000 feet (300 meters) into the air. This is only the fourth time in 200 years that Kilauea volcano has produced repeated lava-fountain episodes. The most famous eruption of this kind began in 1983 and lasted for decades, reshaping parts of Hawaii Island before ending in 2018.

This time, Kilauea volcano could open new vents at lower elevations, triggering continuous lava flows or the activity could subside if the magma supply weakens, scientists said.
