Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Saturday responded to the appointment of Sergio Gor as the new United States Ambassador to India, calling it “good” that a long-vacant position is finally being filled.

Tharoor’s comments came in response to a post by Indian-origin venture capitalist Asha Jadeja Motwani on social media platform X.

Motwani had praised the nomination of Gor, a close aide of US President Donald Trump, calling it a major development for India-US relations. She described Gor as one of the most important figures in Trump’s inner circle, suggesting his appointment would give India direct access to the highest levels of the US administration.

Reacting to her post, Tharoor replied, “Interesting thoughts from @ashajadeja325. In any case it is good we will finally have a US Ambassador in place. If the Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia is also confirmed soon, we might have a somewhat more stable set of interlocutors!”

The post from Motwani listed five key implications of Gor’s appointment, including faster communication with Washington, stronger pressure on Indian companies to invest in the US, and increased interest from American tech firms in the Indian market.

“India has landed the most powerful American Ambassador in recent history. This is our chance to make sure that our communications are crystal clear and that we express the importance of this bilateral relationship between our two great democracies. What we could not communicate last few months we can communicate in hours once Sergio is in place,” Jadega wrote in her post.

Sergio Gor, 38, has served as White House personnel director and played a significant role in Trump’s 2024 election campaign. His influence reportedly grew after he began overseeing the vetting of political appointees in the new administration.

President Trump confirmed Gor’s nomination on social media, stating that he would also serve as Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. “For the most populous region in the World, it is important that I have someone I can fully trust to deliver on my agenda,” Trump wrote.

The ambassadorial post has been vacant since January, when Eric Garcetti stepped down. Gor’s appointment is now pending confirmation by the US Senate.
