French President Emmanuel Macron was briefly left stranded on the streets of New York after police halted his vehicle to clear the way for US President Donald Trump’s motorcade. Emmanuel Macron had been returning from the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) when the incident occurred.

Videos circulating on social media showed the French leader taking the delay in stride. In one clip, Emmanuel Macron is seen jokingly phoning Donald Trump and saying, “Guess what? I am waiting in the street because everything is paused for you.”

The footage also showed Emmanuel Macron walking through Manhattan, smiling for photographs and shaking hands with people on the street. Reports said the French president walked for about 30 minutes before resuming his journey to the French Embassy.

Emmanuel Macron is in New York for the 80th session of the UNGA, where France co-hosted a high-level summit on Palestinian statehood alongside Saudi Arabia. At the meeting, Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta and Monaco announced they were formally recognising a Palestinian state.

The diplomatic push has drawn sharp criticism from Israel as the country’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the move, saying the countries were “rewarding terror with enormous prize.”
