US President Donald Trump on Friday backtracked on his “lost India to China” remark on social media and said that he does not believe the same has taken place.

Responding to a question during a press briefing at the White House, Trump seemed to soften his tone against India, which he has targeted in recent weeks for continued Russian oil purchase, and said that he has been “very disappointed” with New Delhi for energy ties with Moscow. He, however, added that he still gets along well with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“I don’t think we have. I’ve been very disappointed that India would be buying so much oil from Russia. I let them know that. We put a very big tariff on India- 50 per cent, a very high tariff. I get along very well with (PM) Modi, as you know. He was here a couple of months ago; in fact, we went to the Rose Garden and had a press conference,” he said.

Earlier in the day, he posted a picture of PM Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping and captioned it, “Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest, China. May they have a long and prosperous future together! President Donald J. Trump.”
