US President Donald Trump is expected to attend the US Open men’s singles final at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday, marking his first visit to the Grand Slam tennis event in 2015, according to reports.

A White House official confirmed to the BBC that the US president was expected to attend the US Open final on September 7. Trump was a regular at tennis events, but has not attended the New York City tournament since he first came to power in 2016.

However, Trump was booed by fans during his last appearance at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre when he attended the quarterfinal between Serena and Venus Williams in the midst of his 2016 presidential campaign.

The Trump Organisation previously held a suite at the US Open, located next to the television broadcast booth in Arthur Ashe Stadium, but discontinued it in 2017, during the first year of Donald Trump’s presidency.

The men’s final is scheduled for 2 pm ET (11:30 pm IST). The finalists will be decided by two semi-final clashes on Friday. Novak Djokovic takes on Carlos Alcaraz in a closely-watched encounter, while Italy’s Jannik Sinner will play against Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime.

According to Page Six, the airspace will be restricted during Trump’s visit on Sunday, which is likely to disrupt the travel plans of tennis fans who typically fly by helicopter to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre.

Trump had visited Flushing Meadows on several occasions before being joined by his wife Melania on his last visit a decade ago. He was greeted by American six-time major champion John McEnroe, and watched the game from a hospitality area.

Since his election in November, Trump has attended and influenced several high-profile sporting events and has regularly made public appearances with athletes and sports leaders, according to The New York Times. His first major public appearance outside his Mar-a-Lago residence after he clinched his second term was at a UFC fight in New York.
