US President Donald Trump may announce today that the Space Command headquarters will be moved from Colorado to Alabama, reversing a decision made by his predecessor Joe Biden. Donald Trump is expected to make the announcement from the Oval Office, marking his first official public appearance in a week, which White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described as an “exciting announcement related to the Department of Defense.”

The decision is likely to reopen a fierce dispute between Colorado and Alabama, both of which have vied to host the command. Donald Trump initially ruled in 2021, during his first term, that the base should be relocated to Alabama but Joe Biden later overturned that decision, opting to keep the command in Colorado, where it has been housed on a temporary basis.
Beyond questions of military efficiency, the issue has carried political undertones as Colorado is a Democratic-leaning state while Alabama is reliably Republican.
This comes after the US Department of Defense’s media distribution site briefly listed Donald Trump’s announcement as being about “US Space Command Headquarters” before editing the description to the more general “President Trump makes an announcement.”

In recent weeks, Donald Trump has also floated the idea of renaming the Pentagon from the Department of Defense to the Department of War, prompting chatter that his announcement could extend beyond the Space Command dispute.

Ahead of Donald Trump’s Oval Office address, speculation on social media reached fever pitch as some social media users on X (formerly Twitter) said that the US President would announce his resignation on health grounds while others joked about him “abolishing the Pentagon”. A few even suggested that the mystery bag seen tossed from the White House days earlier was somehow connected to Donald Trump’s announcement as memes and conspiracy theories outpaced official hints.
