Denmark’s foreign minister summoned the most senior American diplomat in Copenhagen following reports that US citizens have carried out covert operations in Greenland aimed at promoting its secession from Denmark. Citing unnamed sources public broadcaster DR reported that the individuals had sought to infiltrate Greenlandic society and identify supporters of US annexation, although it could not determine who they were working for.

Denmark Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said, “Any attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of the Kingdom [of Denmark] will of course be unacceptable.” He confirmed that US charge d’affaires Mark Stroh had been called in over the allegations.

Intelligence Warnings

Danish intelligence agency PET said Greenland- an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark- was increasingly being targeted by “various kinds of influence campaigns”. It warned that such efforts could exploit “existing or invented disagreements” through both physical agents and disinformation, with the aim of sowing discord between Copenhagen and Nuuk. PET said it had strengthened its presence in Greenland and deepened cooperation with local authorities.

One American visited Greenland’s capital Nuuk to draw up a list of locals supportive of US efforts, with the apparent aim of recruiting them into a secession campaign, as per the report.

Donald Trump’s Remarks On Greenland

The controversy comes after repeated remarks by US President Donald Trump suggesting Washington should annex Greenland, even hinting earlier this year he would not rule out using force. US Vice President JD Vance has also accused Denmark of underinvesting in the Arctic territory.

Denmark, a NATO and EU member which has long viewed Washington as one of its closest  allies, also summoned the US charge d’affaires earlier this year, following a Wall Street Journal report alleging US intelligence agencies had been tasked with focusing more closely on Greenland’s independence movement and attitudes towards American mineral extraction.

At the time, US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard did not deny the reports but accused the Wall Street Journal of “breaking the law and undermining our nation’s security and democracy”.
