Controversy once again surrounds U.S. President Donald Trump, who has reignited his long-running feud with Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut. In a scathing post on Truth Social, Trump labelled Blumenthal “Da Nang Dick” and accused him of being “perhaps the biggest joke in the United States Senate”.

Trump, known for his unfiltered style, launched into a tirade accusing Blumenthal of lying about his military service during the Vietnam War. “Sanctimonious Richard ‘Da Nang Dick’ Blumenthal… convinced everyone that he was a great war hero,” Trump wrote, adding that Blumenthal had “lied for 20 years” about his role in Vietnam.

He went on to allege that Blumenthal was exposed as a “fraud” when soldiers from his supposed platoon denied knowing him. “He broke down, tears flowing from his eyes, and admitted he lied,” Trump claimed, calling for an investigation into the senator’s past statements.

Who is Richard Blumenthal?

Richard Blumenthal, a prominent Democrat, has served as United States Senator from Connecticut since 2011 and is currently in his third term. Before joining the Senate, he was the Attorney General of Connecticut for two decades, the longest tenure in the state’s history.

Known for his focus on consumer protection, gun control, veterans’ affairs, and environmental policy, Blumenthal is regarded as a consistent liberal voice in the Senate. He currently serves on key committees, including Judiciary, Armed Services, Homeland Security, and Veterans’ Affairs.

However, his career has not been without controversy. In 2010, Blumenthal admitted he had “misspoken” about serving in Vietnam. He clarified that while he served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve during the war, he had never been deployed to Vietnam. Though he apologised publicly, the episode has since provided ammunition for his political opponents, especially Trump.

Why Trump calls him “Da Nang Dick”?

Trump’s mocking nickname “Da Nang Dick” refers to Da Nang, a key military base in Vietnam, and alludes to Blumenthal’s past misstatements about his service. Trump has repeatedly used the insult to question the senator’s integrity, portraying him as dishonest and hypocritical.

The feud between the two men has spanned years. Blumenthal has been a fierce critic of Trump’s presidency, supporting legal challenges against him and frequently condemning his policies. Trump’s latest outburst appears to be a continuation of that animosity, timed alongside renewed political sparring within the Republican and Democratic camps.

 Pam Bondi-Blumenthal clash

The controversy deepened this week after Attorney General Pam Bondi clashed with Blumenthal during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. Bondi accused him of “lying” about his military service after he questioned her about potential lobbying links involving her former firm, Ballard Partners. “How dare you? Don’t you ever challenge my integrity,” Bondi retorted.

Blumenthal, maintaining his composure, did not respond directly to her personal attack. The exchange reignited debate over the senator’s past remarks and Trump’s continued use of them as political fodder.
