A 27-year-old woman died of starvation in Bali after following an extreme “fruitarian” diet that left her weighing just 22 kilograms. The woman, identified as Karolina Krzyzak, checked into the Sumberkima Hill resort in December 2024 and asked for a villa with a pool. Staff at the resort immediately noticed she appeared severely underweight, describing her as “emaciated” with sunken eyes and protruding collarbones.

Her condition deteriorated rapidly during her stay. Hotel employees recalled that her fingernails had turned yellow, her teeth were rotting and she often struggled to walk on her own. On one occasion, a night clerk had to help escort her back to her room. Resort staff repeatedly urged her to seek medical treatment but she declined every time.

Found Dead After Three Days

Three days after checking in, hotel workers became alarmed when a local friend of Karolina Krzyzak’s contacted them saying she had not heard from her since her arrival. Staff rushed to her villa, where they discovered her motionless and unresponsive. She was later declared dead from severe malnutrition. Medical reports cited by The Sun said she had been suffering from osteoporosis and an albumin deficiency, both associated with prolonged starvation and poor nutrition.

Friends said that Karolina Krzyzak had long struggled with body image issues and had battled anorexia as a teenager. During her studies in the UK, she developed a passion for yoga and veganism, which gradually led her to adopt fruitarianism- a diet consisting almost exclusively of raw fruit.

Is Fruitarianism Dangerous?

Nutritionists warn that fruitarianism is one of the most extreme forms of restrictive eating. While fruits provide vitamins and fiber, they lack essential proteins, fats and minerals necessary for the body’s survival. Long-term fruitarian diets can lead to organ damage, weakened bones, immune deficiencies and severe malnutrition.
