China on Monday hit back at calls from US Democrats urging the Trump administration to push Beijing to reduce what they termed “structural overproduction,” insisting the claims are unfounded and politically motivated.

Asked to respond to reports that Democrats want any future bilateral trade deal to include binding requirements on Beijing to cut industrial overcapacity, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian dismissed the charge.

“We have repeatedly stated that hyping up the so-called ‘overcapacity in China’ deviates from objective facts and economic laws, provides an excuse for protectionism, and its real purpose is to curb China’s high-quality development. We firmly oppose this,” Lin said at a regular press briefing.

The remarks come amid renewed debate in Washington over trade and industrial competition with Beijing, with critics accusing China of producing more goods than global markets can absorb, distorting trade flows. Beijing, however, maintains that its industrial policies are consistent with market rules and are aimed at driving sustainable growth.
