China’s mesmerising Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge dubbed “the Earth’s crack” is now open to traffic. Built 625 metres above the Beipan River, the stunning engineering marvel is the world’s tallest bridge. This structure reduces travel time across the canyon from two hours to just two minutes.

Built in about three and a half years, the bridge is 2,890 meters long with a main span of 1,420 meters. This bridge sets the record for both the tallest bridge in the world and the world’s largest span bridge built in a mountainous area.

Visuals show the scenic beauty around the bridge. Live drone footage broadcast by state media showed vehicles crossing the massive bridge on September 28.

As per Xinhua News Agency, the bridge had completed a key load test on August 25. The load test, considered the final step before the bridge welcomes traffic — included both static and dynamic tests. The testing team drove 96 trucks, weighing about 3,300 tons in total, onto designated points of the deck in batches to measure displacement and stress in the main span, towers, cables and suspenders.

Guizhou, one of China’s less developed regions, has built more than 30,000 bridges, three among the world’s tallest. The previous tallest bridge, also crossing the Beipan River, lies just over 100 kilometers away and was opened in 2016.
