“I am pleased to announce that I will soon be awarding Charlie Kirk, posthumously, the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” Trump said.
Trump expressed grief and anger over the assassination of Kirk, calling the incident “a dark moment for America”.
“Charlie was a giant of his generation…and an inspiration to millions and millions of people. Our prayers are with his wonderful wife and beautiful children. We miss him greatly….I can guarantee you only one thing that we will have a very big crowd,” Trump added.
Kirk was shot in the neck while speaking at the event. Video from the scene showed him addressing a large crowd when a single shot rang out.
The father-of-two collapsed in his chair before sounds of panic erupted in the audience.
