Charlie Kirk, a US-based political activist and prominent conservative commentator known for his strong support of the MAGA movement, was shot and killed in broad daylight on Wednesday morning at Utah Valley University. He was rushed to a nearby medical facility but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Following the tragedy, an old video clip began circulating on social media, sparking fresh debate. The footage, recorded during a TPUSA Faith event on April 5, 2023, at the Salt Lake City campus of Awaken Church, captured Kirk expressing strong support for gun rights. When asked how to defend the Second Amendment amid public outcry after mass shootings, Kirk stated, “I’m a big Second Amendment fan.”

He went on to argue that the Second Amendment serves as a vital safeguard against government tyranny. In a controversial remark, Kirk added, “I think it’s worth it. I think it’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights.”

On Wednesday, the fatal shooting occurred while Kirk was addressing the audience during his national speaking series, The American Comeback Tour. Just moments before he was shot, Kirk was answering a question about mass shootings. An audience member had asked, “Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last ten years?” to which Kirk replied, “Counting or not counting gang violence,” before being gunned down.
Initial reports regarding Kirk’s condition remained unclear, but speculation ended when US President Donald Trump officially confirmed Kirk’s death. In a public statement, Trump announced that US flags would be flown at half-mast until Sunday at 6 p.m. in Kirk’s honour.
NBC reported that police briefly detained a suspect, but the individual was released after being found not guilty.
Former President Barack Obama expressed his outrage among other leaders and officers, while former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated, “The murder of Charlie Kirk is a tragedy, and a sign of the utter desperation and cowardice of those who could not defeat him in argument.”
