Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is facing increased legal pressure as Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has recently ordered tighter security measures around his residence. The federal judge on Tuesday directed police to monitor Bolsonaro’s home around the clock, citing a “risk of flight.”

The order mandates that Bolsonaro’s mansion in Brasília be placed under 24-hour police surveillance. Justice Moraes also instructed law enforcement to ensure that Bolsonaro is complying with all restraining orders currently in place. Officers are expected to remain “discreet,” staying outside the property and avoiding disruption to the surrounding neighbourhood.

This decision builds on a series of previous rulings aimed at maintaining close surveillance of the former president. Since mid-July, Bolsonaro has been required to wear an electronic anklet to monitor his movements. In early August, he was formally placed under house arrest.

Pressure to intensify security increased after Brazil’s prosecutor general requested stricter surveillance last Monday. That request came in response to a federal police report alleging that Bolsonaro had drafted a request for political asylum in Argentina. Authorities say the document was discovered on Bolsonaro’s mobile phone and was dated February 2024. It was reportedly addressed to Argentine President Javier Milei.

The developments come just days before Bolsonaro is scheduled to go on trial. The proceedings, which begin next Tuesday, will see the far-right leader and seven of his closest allies face charges of attempting to orchestrate a coup following the 2022 election. The prosecution alleges that the group conspired to overturn the election results and illegally retain power.

Bolsonaro has denied the accusations, but legal analysts suggest the evidence against him is substantial and could result in a conviction and a significant sentence.

In a separate but related case, the Supreme Court is also investigating Bolsonaro and his son, Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, for allegedly attempting to obstruct justice and pressure judges into acquitting the former president. Eduardo, who has been in the US since February.
