Skywatchers around the world are set for a rare astronomical event this month: a Black Moon, which will occur in the early hours of August 23, 2025, at 2:06 a.m. EDT (11:36 a.m. IST). Unlike a full moon that lights up the sky, this moon will remain completely invisible but its rarity and timing make it a significant moment for astronomers and stargazers alike.

What Is A Black Moon?

Recommended Stories

A Black Moon is not an official astronomical term but rather a popular name for a rare type of new moon that happens because of the way the lunar cycle overlaps with the calendar. A full moon occurs when the moon’s near side is fully illuminated by the Sun, making it appear as a bright, round disk in the night sky. A new moon, on the other hand, happens when the moon’s near side is in complete shadow, turning it invisible to the naked eye. The Black Moon is essentially a special new moon, defined in two ways: it can either be the second new moon in a calendar month (called a monthly Black Moon, which happens about once every 29 months) or the third new moon in a season that unusually has four new moons (a seasonal Black Moon, which occurs about once every 33 months).

Why Is The August 2025 Black Moon Special?

This year’s Black Moon falls under the seasonal definition. In the current season, which runs between the June 20 solstice and the September 22 equinox, four new moons occur on June 25, July 24, August 23 and September 21. The third in this sequence, August 23, becomes the “Black Moon.” That makes this phenomenon both rare and noteworthy, since most seasons contain only three new moons.

Can Stargazers See Black Moon?

No. By definition, the Black Moon will be invisible, because its sunlit side faces away from Earth. However, that invisibility is what makes it valuable for skywatchers. With no moonlight to wash out the night sky, conditions are perfect for stargazing. On the night of August 23-24, observers in India and elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere will be able to see the Milky Way at its brightest, arching across the sky. The Summer Triangle of stars- Vega, Deneb and Altair- will be prominent and those with binoculars or telescopes can look for deep-sky objects such as the Dumbbell Nebula, the glowing remains of a dying star. For the best view, astronomers advise heading far from city lights and avoiding light pollution near the southern horizon.

When Is The Next Black Moon?

The next monthly Black Moon will occur on August 31, 2027. The next seasonal Black Moon will follow on August 20, 2028.
