Sean “Diddy” Combs, one of the most recognisable figures in hip-hop and global entertainment, has been sentenced to four years and two months in prison, alongside a $500,000 fine, after being convicted of transporting individuals across state lines for drug-fuelled sexual encounters. The ruling came from Judge Arun Subramanian, an Indian-origin federal judge in Manhattan, who presided over the trial.

The sentencing marks a dramatic fall from grace for the once-celebrated music mogul, who for decades symbolised wealth, fame and entrepreneurial success.

What  do we know about the trial?

The sentencing followed a two-month trial that painted a disturbing picture of abuse and excess. Several women testified against Combs, alleging threats, blackmail, sexual assault and coercion into drug-laced sexual marathons.

Although acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges, the court found him guilty of transporting women and male sex workers across state lines for sexual activities fuelled by drugs.

Judge Subramanian condemned Combs’ actions, telling him, “Why did it happen so long? Because you had the power and the resources to keep it going, and because you weren’t caught.”

Praising the bravery of those who testified, he added, “You gave them a voice. You stood up to power.”

Who is Judge Arun Subramanian? Man behind the verdict

The sentencing also placed the spotlight on Judge Arun Subramanian, who has emerged as a significant figure in American legal history.

Born in 1979 in Pittsburgh to Indian immigrant parents, Subramanian studied computer science and English before pursuing law at Columbia Law School, where he was recognised as both a James Kent and Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.

Appointed by former US President Joe Biden in 2022, he became the first South Asian federal judge in Manhattan. Subramanian’s career has been marked by work defending victims of child exploitation, recovering over a billion dollars in fraud cases, and fighting against unfair business practices. Prior to his judicial appointment, he was a partner at Susman Godfrey LLP, specialising in commercial and insolvency law.

In court, Combs appeared visibly dejected as the sentence was delivered. During proceedings, he was shown a video of his career and personal life, which reportedly reduced him to tears.

In an emotional statement, he addressed Judge Subramanian, “I ask your honour for a chance to be a father again, a son again … a leader in my community again … for a chance to get the help that I desperately need to be a better person.”

He also apologised to his family before leaving the courtroom. Despite his pleas, the court upheld the maximum fine and lengthy jail sentence, reflecting the seriousness of the charges.

This case is only one chapter in a broader series of legal battles for the music mogul. Since 2023, Combs has faced multiple lawsuits and federal investigations, including allegations of rape, violent abuse, coercion, and operating a so-called “sex trafficking enterprise.”

Singer Cassie Ventura, among others, accused him of long-term sexual and physical abuse. Federal agents raided his Los Angeles and Miami properties as part of investigations into these claims. Although Combs has denied all allegations, the accusations have left his career in tatters, with sponsorships withdrawn and reputational damage that could prove irreparable.

For years, Combs stood as a giant in hip-hop and business, a Grammy-winning artist, record producer, fashion entrepreneur and media mogul. His ventures spanned from music and clothing lines to liquor brands, making him one of the wealthiest figures in entertainment.
