In a move signalling a significant shift in South Asian military diplomacy, Bangladesh Army’s Quartermaster General, Lieutenant General Md Faizur Rahman, has met with General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), at Pakistan’s General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.

The meeting comes amid growing signs of deepening defence cooperation between Bangladesh and Pakistan, especially after the political transition in Dhaka following the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. According to senior sources, this marks the 14th high-level military meeting between the two nations since the political change in Bangladesh last year.

During their discussion, both military leaders exchanged views on the prevailing regional security environment and emphasised their shared resolve to enhance cooperation in the defence and security domains. General Mirza highlighted the upward trajectory in bilateral relations and expressed confidence in exploring new avenues for defence collaboration, including intelligence-sharing mechanisms and joint training initiatives.

Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman praised the professionalism of the Pakistan Armed Forces and acknowledged their sacrifices in the fight against terrorism. Sources reveal that the two sides exchanged frameworks for intelligence cooperation and agreed to increase the frequency of bilateral visits to cement strategic trust.

In a development being closely watched across the region, Lt Gen Faizur Rahman is also expected to meet Pakistan’s Field Marshal and Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, during his visit. The anticipated meeting is being viewed as a pivotal moment in redefining defence diplomacy between the two South Asian nations.

Controversially, General Faizur Rahman has come under scrutiny in Dhaka for allegedly attempting to remove the Bangladesh Army Chief earlier this year, reportedly with covert support from elements within the Pakistan military establishment. While these reports remain unverified officially, they have fueled intense debate within Bangladesh’s political and military circles.

Observers note that the post-Sheikh Hasina regime in Dhaka appears to be reorienting its foreign and security policy, warming up to Islamabad after decades of estrangement following the 1971 Liberation War. The two nations have recently expanded ties with initiatives such as visa-free entry, increased bilateral trade, and proposed defence agreements—a dramatic departure from past hostility.
