Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in his address at the United Nations General Assembly said that any violation of the Indus Waters Treaty would amount to an “act of war,” while also announcing that Islamabad has nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in facilitating a ceasefire earlier this year.

Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan’s foreign policy is based on “peace, mutual respect and cooperation,” and reiterated that disputes must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

“In May this year my country confronted unprovoked aggression from the eastern front. Our response was in accordance with self-defence. We sent them back in humiliation,” Shehbaz Sharif said. He alleged that “India attacked our cities and targeted our citizens” and said, “Any violation of the Indus Waters Treaty represents an act of war.”

The Pakistan prime minister also credited Donald Trump with helping defuse tensions between New Delhi and Pakistan. Shehbaz Sharif said, The ceasefire was facilitated by President Trump. Who would have lived to tell what happened- hinting at the possibility of nuclear war between the two countries. We nominated President Trump for the Nobel Prize.”

He added, “Pakistan stands ready for comprehensive dialogue with India on outstanding issues.”
