Amid a corruption scandal involving his highly influential sister and right-hand woman Karina Milei, Argentina President Javier Milei was pelted with plants, rocks, and bottles during a campaign rally near Buenos Aires on Wednesday.

Milei escaped unhurt as his security detail whisked him away when demonstrators protesting the corruption scandal targeted him.

After Milei left the scene, scuffles broke out between his supporters and opponents during which a woman suffered rib injuries and was taken away by ambulance.

According to presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni on X, the President was whisked from the scene by his security detail and did not sustain injuries after his motorcade was attacked.

The incident took place while he was campaigning for the October mid-term elections. Videos showed him riding in the back of a pickup truck and greeting supporters in the city of Lomas de Zamora, 20 km south of capital Buenos Aires. Suddenly, protesters began throwing plants, rocks and bottles at his vehicle, which was carrying him and Karina Milei, along with other officials.

Protests have broken out over Karina’s involvement in alleged corruption at the public disability agency.

WHAT IS THE CORRUPTION SCANDAL?

Only minutes before the incident, Milei addressed the corruption scandal following the leak of audio recordings by the former head of the disability agency, Diego Spagnuolo.

In the recordings, which have received wall-to-wall news coverage in Argentina for days, Spagnuolo alleged that Karina pocketed funds destined for people with disabilities.

“Everything (Spagnuolo) says is a lie,” Milei told reporters, breaking his silence over the issue before the protests erupted. “We are going to bring him to justice and prove he lied.”

The upcoming election will be the first major test for the 54-year-old right-wing leader since he became President in December 2023 on a promise to revive Argentina’s ailing economy.

A libertarian economist, he has managed to bring down stubbornly high inflation and produce a budget surplus through steep cuts to public spending, including on people with disabilities.
