Aliens Could Be Eavesdropping On Earth’s Space Conversations With Mars, NASA Study Finds

Researchers suggest Earth’s space signals could reveal our presence to alien civilisations, especially during planetary alignments like Earth and Mars.

The signals could inadvertently reveal Earth’s presence to intelligent life elsewhere in the cosmos.

Alien civilisations might be able to detect Earth’s space communications, according to a new study by researchers from Pennsylvania State University and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The research, published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, suggests that when scientists send radio commands to spacecraft like Mars rovers or orbiters, a portion of those transmissions continues travelling beyond the solar system- potentially forever. These signals, while intended for interplanetary probes, could inadvertently reveal Earth’s presence to intelligent life elsewhere in the cosmos.

Pinchen Fan, a graduate student in astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State and lead author of the study, said, “Humans are predominantly communicating with the spacecraft and probes we have sent to study other planets like Mars. But a planet like Mars does not block the entire transmission, so a distant spacecraft or planet positioned along the path of these interplanetary communications could potentially detect the spillover. This suggests that we should look for alignment of planets outside of our solar system when searching for extraterrestrial communications.”

The study highlights that when Earth and another planet, such as Mars, align from the perspective of a distant observer, extraterrestrial intelligence could be significantly more likely to intercept these signals.

Pinchen Fan explained, “Based on data from the last 20 years, we found that if an extraterrestrial intelligence were in a location that could observe the alignment of Earth and Mars, there’s a 77% chance that they would be in the path of one of our transmissions- orders of magnitude more likely than being in a random position at a random time. If they could view an alignment with another solar-system planet, there is a 12% chance they would be in the path of our transmissions. When not observing a planet alignment, however, these chances are minuscule.”

The findings not only raise the possibility of Earth being detected by alien observers but also provide a new strategy for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Just as extraterrestrials could overhear Earth’s planetary communications, scientists on Earth might also listen for similar interplanetary signals from other civilisations.
