A lawyer of Bangladesh’s Supreme Court has demanded the removal of Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection from the science textbooks for classes 9-10 in the country.

Sarwar Hossain has sent a notice to the Ministry of Education to take necessary steps in this regard. He also said he would approach the High Court if the authorities fail to take steps on his notice.

Hossain is of the view that secondary-level students should not be taught the theory as it creates “unnecessary pressure” on young minds, Bangladesh’s The Business Standard reported.

“It may be taught at higher levels for research purposes, but not in secondary education,” he said, highlighting that the notice was sent in public interest as Bangladesh is a Muslim-majority country.

“We believe that humanity began with Adam and Eve, as mentioned in Islam. Evolutionary theory, which claims humans originated from apes, contradicts this,” the lawyer said.

What Is Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution?

Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection is a landmark idea in science that explains how species change and new ones arise. One of its most debated aspects is Darwin’s claim that humans share a common ancestor with apes, a 19th-century theory that challenged traditional religious beliefs and remains controversial in some societies even today.

In his theory, Darwin argued that all living organisms, including humans, are connected through a long evolutionary process that has taken place over millions of years. The foundation of his idea is natural selection. Within any group of organisms, individuals differ in traits such as strength, colour, or ability to find food. Some of these traits give an advantage in survival and reproduction. For instance, animals that blend into their environment may avoid predators more effectively. Those with favourable traits are more likely to survive, reproduce, and pass these traits to the next generation.

Over time, advantageous traits become widespread, leading to gradual changes in populations. This process explains not just small variations within species but also the emergence of entirely new species.

Darwin’s theory does not attempt to explain the origin of life itself but rather how life has diversified since it began. Supported today by genetics, fossils, and molecular biology, it has become the central framework of modern biology.
