At least five people sustained injuries after a man went on a stabbing spree in the southern port city of Marseille in France on Tuesday. Later, the suspect got killed by the police.

Out of the five injured, one was in a critical condition.

According to news agency AFP, the assailant has been identified as a Tunisian national with legal status in France.

AFP, citing prosecutor Nicolas Bessone, reported that the assailant stabbed several people at a hotel that had just evicted him for non-payment, then attacked several others on a busy shopping street.

“It would appear that he blindly and gratuitously attempted to strike people,” AFP quoted Bessone as saying.

It is learnt that the attacker first stabbed his roommate, leaving him in critical condition. Then, he attacked the hotel’s manager, who fled into the street along with his son, who was stabbed “in the back”.

Bessone said the father-son duo were in “relative emergency” condition but “their lives are not believed to be in danger.”

The attacker then went on what prosecutors described as a “criminal rampage” on a busy street, attacking bystanders and injuring at least two people in the face with a baton he carried along with two knives

Police patrol officers in the area quickly responded, ordering the suspect to drop his weapons. When he refused, they “neutralised” him, according to the prosecutor. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, the man died.

Authorities have launched an investigation into attempted murder and attempted murder of a police officer.

Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau was scheduled to visit Marseille on Tuesday, with a visit to the city’s police headquarters planned, his office said.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and alarming. One resident told AFP the man tried to stab police officers during the confrontation. Another said he was wielding “two large butcher knives.”

Police have cordoned off the area, putting up a forensic tent near the crime scene.
