IMD issues red and orange alerts as heavy rainfall, landslides, and floods hit Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Delhi, disrupting daily life and travel.

All India Weather: Most parts of the country are facing the wrath of heavy rainfall, landslides, and cloudbursts. An intense spell of rain struck Arunachal Pradesh and Odisha, while flash floods wreaked havoc in the states of North India.
Amid the intensifying rainfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a widespread rainfall alert on Tuesday for several parts of the country as a low-pressure area forms over the northwest Bay of Bengal.

As per the weather agency, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across Northwest and East India over the next two days, with isolated extremely heavy showers forecasted today in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha.
In response to the weather warnings, schools, colleges, and offices in the affected regions have been advised to close, with employees encouraged to work from home.
Heavy Rainfall Alert In These States
The weather department has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall for Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Gujarat.
An orange alert has been issued for Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, West Rajasthan, Telangana, parts of Maharashtra, Goa, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Extremely heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Tuesday, while persistent rain is expected over Uttarakhand; heavy showers are expected in East Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Chandigarh.

Chhattisgarh may see continued intense rain on September 3 as well, while Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada may receive rain till September 7
Gujarat, especially Saurashtra and Kutch, will also receive extremely heavy rainfall over the next 7 days.
Rain Lashes Delhi
The water level in Yamuna river crossed the danger mark in the national capital on Tuesday. Meanwhile, authorities have announced that the Old Railway Bridge over the Yamuna in Delhi will be closed to traffic from Tuesday evening.
Loha Pul will also be inaccessible from 5 PM on September 2, following a rise in river water levels.
Thunderstorms Across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh
The IMD also issued a red nowcast warning on Tuesday, forecasting heavy rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour, accompanied by thunderstorms, in multiple districts across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

According to the IMD, the districts of Pilibhit, Lakhimpur, and Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh were placed under a red alert. In Haryana, the warning covered Fatehabad, Jind, Hisar, Gurugram, Rewari, and Mewat.
“Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and heavy rainfall can cause local flooding, traffic disruption, and damage to weak structures. Residents are advised to remain indoors, avoid waterlogged areas, and follow safety guidelines,” the IMD advisory mentioned.
Heavy Rain Lashes Odisha
The entire coastal Odisha has been hit by heavy rain, and normal life has been affected since Monday night. Many urban pockets, including the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, reported waterlogging.
Due to the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, the state is expected to get more downpour in the next four days, the IMD said.
As the sea condition is very likely to be rough during Tuesday and Wednesday, the IMD has cautioned fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off Odisha coast till September 3.
The IMD in a statement said, “Under the influence of the upper air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and adjoining Myanmar coast, a low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal at 5.30 am on September 2. It is likely to become more marked over the same region during the next 24 hours.”
Heavy Rains, Thunderstorms Forecast In Andhra
The IMD forecast heavy rains and thunderstorms in parts of Andhra Pradesh between September 1 and 5.
According to the India Meteorological Department, heavy rain is likely at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP) and Yanam on Monday, along with thunderstorms accompanied by lightning over NCAP, south coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP), and Rayalaseema.
“Heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected in several parts of Andhra Pradesh between September 1 and 5,” the IMD said in a press release.
The department also forecast strong winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph at isolated places over NCAP, Yanam, SCAP, and Rayalaseema from September 1 to 3.
