Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the state education department to file a revision against the order of the Supreme Court regarding the mandatory requirement of TET for serving teachers. This came amid reports of two UP teachers dying by suicide after the apex court’s order.

The Chief Minister said that the teachers of the state are experienced and have been provided training from time to time by the government. In such a situation, it is not appropriate to ignore their qualifications and years of service.

In the last five days, two teachers in Uttar Pradesh—in their late forties and early fifties—have died by suicide, allegedly unable to cope with the pressure of passing the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) made mandatory by the Supreme Court’s order. Their families allege that they were under stress over preparing for the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET).

On September 1, 2025, a bench of Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Augustine George Masih ruled that all government school teachers with more than five years of service left must qualify the TET or face compulsory retirement or resignation. The order was passed while hearing a petition related to teaching appointments in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra but has a pan-India impact, affecting nearly 10 lakh teachers—about two lakh of them in Uttar Pradesh alone.

Ganeshilal, a 52-year-old government teacher from Hamirpur, had left home early Saturday morning, telling his family he was going to school. He did not come back.

“We had just returned from Gaya after performing our grandparents’ pind-daan three days ago. Father had been very tense ever since the Supreme Court’s order came,” said Piyush.

Only a few days earlier, Mahoba district had witnessed a similar tragedy. Forty-nine-year-old Manoj Kumar Sahu, principal of a composite school, was found hanging in a room on his terrace in Gandhi Nagar.

“For the past two-three days, he spoke only about TET. We had even made a timetable to prepare together,” said his elder son, 22-year-old Suryansh.

Teacher unions said that while they support improving teaching standards, the government must offer either exemptions or special provisions for older teachers.

“We demand relaxation in age and time, along with proper coaching support, so that teachers are not pushed into depression,” said a representative of the Uttar Pradesh Primary Teachers’ Association.
